 Raffaello Sanzio (1483-1520)

Study for the Triumph of Bacchus in India

For some time this was attributed to Perin del Vago, then to the school of Raphael, but in 1986 it was recognised as authentic. The Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso d’Este in 1517 commissioned Raphael to paint the fresco and in September of that year the painter sent a small drawing to Ferrara followed by a second one. It is one of the Sanzio’s most crowded drawings.

A lungo attribuito a Perin del Vaga, poi alla bottega di Raffaello, è stato riconosciuto autografo nel 1986. L’affresco fu commissionato a Raffaello dal duca di Ferrara, Alfonso I d’Este, nel 1517, e nel settembre di quell’anno il pittore aveva già spedito a Ferrara un piccolo disegno, seguito poi da una seconda versione. Uno dei disegni più affollati del Sanzio.
