The Child plays with a lamb held in the other child’s arms. This is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s themes that Raphael used in various drawings and paintings from 1506-7, often emphasising the softer and affectionate aspects of the theme. The Virgin’s face shows traces of overlay in pen that makes the profile more rigid.

Il Bambino gioca con un agnello sorretto tra le braccia dell’altro piccolo; si tratta di un motivo leonardesco che Raffaello ha ripreso in vari disegni e dipinti del 1506-7, accentuando spesso gli aspetti più teneri e affettuosi del tema. Il volto della Vergine mostra tracce di ripassatura a penna che ne irrigidiscono molto il profilo.
