THE MIRACLE OF THE SPRING
St. Francis reaches the top of the mountain on a poor man’s donkey and, feeling extremely thirsty, he cries for some water. All at once he sees it flow from a rock. The source did not exist before and was never seen again. This, together with the next frescois often considered to be the work of Giotto and it is for this reason that they were famous even at the time of Vasari.

San Francesco sale sopra un monte in groppa ad un asino di un pover’uomo, il quale, sentendosi morire dalla sete, invoca un po’ d’acqua e, tutto ad un tratto, la vede sgorgare da una roccia: tale fonte prima non esisteva e dopo non fu più vista.
Questa, assieme alla scena dell’affresco successivo, sono spesso considerate completamente autografe e, forse proprio a questo motivo, devono la loro notorietà, sin dai tempi del Vasari.
