ST. FRANCIS GIVING HIS CLOAK TO A POOR MAN  
This scene depicts the meeting between St. Francis and a noble, but badly-dressed knight. The Saint, moved to compassion, gives the knight his cloak. This is unanimously recognised as the first part of the whole cycle and, thanks to the typical elements of Giotto’s artistic language, the painting may truly accepted as by the artist himself.

SAN FRANCESCO CHE DONA IL MANTELLO AL POVERO
Nella scena è raffigurato l’incontro tra S. Francesco e un cavaliere, nobile ma povero e malvestito. Il Santo, mosso a compassione, omaggia il cavaliere con il suo mantello.
Questo viene, quasi unanimemente, riconosciuto come il primo scomparto, in quanto a stesura, dell’intero ciclo e, grazie agli elementi tipici del linguaggio artistico di Giotto, il dipinto è riconosciuto come del tutto autografo.
