ISAAC BLESSES JACOB (detail)
In this first fresco Isaac, already blind and dying, raises himself from his bed and, sustained by a servant, touches Jacob’s hand that had been cleverly covered with a lamb’s fur to appear that of his virile, natural brother, Esau, believing him to be his favourite son.
The space seems to be narrow but well defined in the distance. Isaac’s halo is thick, something quite new in the history of art, showing, without doubt, that which is “in the fore” and “behind”.

In questo primo affresco Isacco, ormai cieco e morente, si solleva dal letto sostenuto da un’ancella e, toccando la mano di Giacobbe, il quale astutamente l’aveva ricoperta con pelle d’agnello per simulare la villosità naturale del fratello Esaù, crede di riconoscere il figlio prediletto.
Lo spazio risulta ristretto ma ben delineato in profondità. L’aureola di Isacco ha un suo spessore, fatto nuovo nella storia dell’arte, delineando così, senza alcun dubbio, cosa è “avanti” e cosa è “indietro”.
