This verse is Clori/Flora, the god who concedes dominion over the flowers is Zephyrus. To move amongst the mythological figures and using the identification over which there is greater agreement, moving from right to left appear: Zephyrus, Clori, Flora, Venus, Cupid, the three Graces and Mercury. Another “reading” shows the months of February, March, April, May, June, July, August and September. The winter months are excluded as in those times it was thought better to not mention them. It should be noted that Flora often was known as Primavera alternating another name, Umberto Baldini in Botticelli’s Primavera, The history of a painting and its restoration, Milan, 1984 whilst a vast archive of art photographs furnishes details of the Primavera but not of Flora. |
