on the route to the East, the goal of merchants and crusaders, the
cathedrals of Apulia are both a distant formulation of the European
idiom and a reflection of exotic elements closer at hand. Into the
stately distortion of the bodies that recall the linearity of the
Byzantines, there creeps a note of pathos that demonstrates how the
roots of the Romanesque go deep into the heart of man.
