Sanmartino Giuseppe    Figura per presepe Di ben diversa matrice doveva essere l'ispirazione più genuina e sentita del Sanmartino, artista tutto istinto ed umori popolareschi, realista e spiritoso, sanguigno e delicato. La tradizione dei pupazzi napoletani da una parte, l'inesausta vena teatrale, sempre più alimentata nel Meridione dalle consuetudini spagnolesche, e, infine, la trascrizione ineffabilmente paesana, inconfondibilmente partenopea, del fatto religioso, agiografico, ed anche storico, cui approdava la gente minuta per una irresistibile volontà di concretezza e di verità, furono le premesse naturali delle fresche invenzioni del Sanmartino, anche nelle opere «minori», quali ingiustamente sono ritenuti i presepi, almeno quando non fu sopraffatto dal troppo pesante intervento dei collaboratori.	Sanmartino Giuseppe    Crèche figures The genuine, sincere inspiration of Sammartino, an artist entirely responsive to popular humors, realistic, witty, sanguine, and subtle, must have come from a quite different milieu. On the one hand there was the Neapolitan puppet tradition, an inexhaustible theatrical vein nourished in southern Italy by Spanish customs; on the other the Neapolitan peasant transformation of sacred or historical fact which served the common people's wish for concreteness and truth. These were the natural foundations for Sammartino's fresh inventions even in his "minor" works (as his crèche figures have unjustifiably been called), at least when not overwhelmed by the contributions of his collaborators.
