Serpotta operava in ambiente periferico, piuttosto chiuso, eppure
la sua opera rivela eccezionali referenze stilistiche e formali,
difficilmente spiegabili con una formazione strettamente locale; anche
se per il suo vastissimo repertorio d'immagini egli poté attingere a
stampe e ad altro materiale grafico, si deve presupporre una formazione
più complessa di quanto offriva la cultura isolana. |

Serpotta worked
in a peripheral, rather enclosed society, but nevertheless his art shows
unusual stylistic and formal elements. Even if he used engravings and
other graphic material for his vast repertory of images, his training
surely extended beyond what was offered by the insular culture of Sicily.
