Michelangelo Buonarroti    Pietà Questo gruppo, destinato all'altare della sua cappella funeraria, impegnò per anni Michelangelo, sino al furore dell'incontentabilità. Era ancora l'ansia di chiudere in forma perfettamente armonica il flusso della vita: ecco il corpo del Cristo, abbandonato, formare, con la sua doppia spezzatura, con le opposte diversioni delle membra, la spirale lacerata che commuove la piramide tragica del viluppo dei corpi, e la riunisce in ritmo interiore.

It represents his anxiety to enclose the ebb and flow of life within the harmonic perfection of form. The broken body of Christ, with its contrary disposition of the limbs, forms a mangled spiral that infuses emotion into the tragic pyramid of tangled bodies and unites it in an inner rhythm.
