Il Prigione - Atlante è
molto discusso, e nella storiografia michelangiolesca ne offrono sin dal
Cinquecento le più varie interpretazioni, il significato simbolico di
queste figure destinate alla Tomba di Giulio II, e lavorate da
Michelangelo in diversi periodi, tra il 1513 e il 1536, forse. Certo è
che tutte, sino esse raffigurazioni di arti liberali, province
assoggettate, popoli miscredenti sottomessi alla vera fede, danno
immagine al tormento morale dell'anima umana che lotta o disperatamente
si rassegna all'asservimento alla materia che avvilisce ed opprime;
tormento che, in termini di ricerca espressiva, si traduce nella lotta
di «forma» e «materia». |

Captive The symbolic meaning of these figures
intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II has led to much discussion in
the literature on Michelangelo ever since the Cinquecento.
The most diverse interpretations have been offered;
but it is certain that all of the Captives, whether they represent the
liberal arts, subjugated provinces, or nations of unbelievers subjected
to the true faith, present concrete images of the moral torment of the
human soul, struggling or resigning itself in despair to the
enslavement of the material that humiliates and oppresses it - the
psychological
torment that is transformed into a struggle between "form" and
"substance". |
