Verrocchio Andrea     Decollazione del Battista Il rilievo, eseguito tra il 1477 e il 1480, si trova sul lato destro dell'altare di S. Giovanni. Alla prospettiva illusionistica e al luminoso flusso dinamico dell'azione, che abbiamo notato nel rilievo del Pollajolo, si sostituisce qui un rapporto sottilmente concettuale tra spazio e personaggi, una visione stilistica e non naturalistica. «L'imperiosa anchilosi del gesto» (Brandi) portato alla massima tensione mimica crea tanti distinti nuclei di energia bloccata, che spezzano in varie direzioni la chiusura spaziale.
