«realismo integrale» di Donatello, che fonde i diversi valori storici,
morali, sentimentali di un tema, nella più concreta rappresentazione di
un personaggio o di un avvenimento rivissuti nella loro attualità,
trova piena espressione nella serie di «Profeti» scolpiti nel corso di
vari anni per il Campanile. Non più immagini rievocanti, ma personaggi
antichi soltanto in sensi spirituale, per la dolorosa coscienza che li
isola, uomini come gli altri, dal presente in cui vivono.
Una coerente impostazione di realismo umanistico regola tutta l'immagine
del Profeta: come il rapporto tra corpo e panneggio non segue la norma
dell'armonia classica, né le spezzate o melodiche sigle del dinamismo
gotico, ma il libero corso di un atteggiamento naturale, così il volto
non ha la terribilità emblematica dei caratteri medievali, né ricalca
la tipologia dei ritratti romani, ma individua, in una sintesi di
nobiltà psicologica e di verità fisionomica, una eterna condizione
umana. |

"integral realism" merges the various historical, moral, and
emotional values of a theme in a complete representation of a character,
or an event as relived in actuality. He found full expression in the
series of prophets carved for the Campanile (bell tower) over the course
of several years. They are no longer images to summon up a mythical
antiquity through the external recourse to classical iconography, but
represent these ancient personages in the spiritual sense the sorrowing
awareness that isolates them, men like all others, from the present in
which they live. A coherent basis of humanistic realism governs the
image of this prophet. The relation of the body to the drapery follows
neither the rule of classical harmony, nor the broken and melodious
abbreviations of the Gothic, but has the freedom of a natural attitude;
likewise the face does not have the symbolic terribilità of medieval
characters, nor does it imitate the characteristics of Roman portraits,
but rather it individualizes, in a synthesis marked by psychological
nobility and truth of feature, an eternal human condition.
