Nello stesso periodo - per questo frammento si pensa al pieno secolo VI - opere di raffinata elaborazione, preziosamente astratte, ma cariche di un sottinteso naturalismo che è stato di proposito trasferito su un piano di emblematica fissità, stanno a rappresentare la persistenza della tradizione classica di livello aulico, interpretata, nel caso in esame, secondo le formule bizantine. Non è escluso che questa sia un'opera importata dall'Oriente.

It is difficult to define so-called barbarian taste, since it is often only a matter of negative elements. In essence it is simply the corruption and vulgarization of the lofty Roman style which, under favorable cultural conditions, shows a capacity to survive even in the darkest centuries of the barbarian invasions. Thus we have examples of delicate workmanship and refined abstraction that are nonetheless imbued with an implied naturalism, deliberately transferred to the level of the static and emblematic. These works show the persistence of the classical tradition of court art, in this case interpreted according to Byzantine formulas. It is not impossible that this work was an importation from the East.
