CYCLAMEN

Family name: Cyclamen europeum and Cyclamen persicum

Family: Primulacee

Place of Origin: The sweet smelling cyclamen of the European woods does not adapt to an indoor situation. The cyclamen that brighten up our winters belongs to the Persicum variety and originally comes from the area that stretches from the Egean Sea to Persia (Iran).

Desription: From the persicum Cyclamen, with its round, flat tuber similar to an onion, developed the numerous varieties of large flowered cyclamen (each flower being about three or four centimeters wide) that are used as flowering indoor plants in winter. The heart-shaped elegant leaves are streaked with silver as are the flowers that open at the end of a long, straight stem. These flowers may be cyclamen in colour but also different tones of red, pink or white.

Cultivation: In order to prolong the cylclamen’s splendid flowering it is wise to place the pots outside on the window-sill taking them in at night if frost is expected. These plants need good light, little sun and do not tolerate the hot, dry air of our appartments.
Water the cyclamens regularly in the saucer avoiding water retention and never directly from above. In this way the leaves and tuber do not rot. Cyclamens prefer fresh but slightly humid soil.
After flowering (the external flowers last the longest) suspend watering for about one month then replace the old soil with a new rich one. Begin watering regularly and use a fertiliser rich in potassium about once a month. Pots should be placed outside in the summer but rigorously in the shade in humid places.

Reproduction: Seeds are used for reproducing these plants but this is not possible in appartments.

CICLAMINO

Nome scientifico: Cyclamen europeum e Cyclamen persicum.

Famiglia: Primulacee.

Luogo d'origine: I profumatissimi ciclamini dei boschi europei non possono purtroppo adattarsi a vivere tra le mura domestiche; i ciclamini che rallegrano i nostri inverni appartengono alla specie persicum e sono originari della zona che va dal mar Egeo fino alla Persia. 

Descrizione: Il Cyclamen persicum, il cui tubero rotondo e  schiacciato è simile a una cipollina, ha dato origine a molte varietà di ciclamini a fiore grande (circa tre o quattro centimetri) che sono utilizzati come piante d'appartamento a fioritura invernale. Sono eleganti le foglie cuoriformi dal verde screziato d'argento come pure i fiori solitari che si schiudono alla sommità di lunghi steli diritti, e possono essere di color ciclamino, ma anche di differenti toni di rosso e rosa oppure bianchi. 

Coltivazione: Per godere a lungo la splendida fioritura dei ciclamini è bene porre i vasi all'esterno, sui davanzali, ritirandoli durante la notte se si temono gelate; le piante desiderano ottima luce, poco sole, e non tollerano il caldo  secco dei nostri appartamenti.  
Per conservare bene i ciclamini conviene versare regolarmente poca acqua nel sottovaso (evitando ristagni) e non innaffiare i vasi dall'alto: in questo modo si evita di provocare marcescenze alle foglie e al tubero. Il ciclamino ama infatti un terreno fresco, ma solo leggermente umido.
A fine fioritura (e la fioritura all'esterno può protrarsi a lungo) si devono sospendere per circa un mese le innaffiature, quindi si deve sostituire la terra con un substato nuovo e ricco e ricominciare a innaffiare regolarmente e a concimare con un concime ricco di potassio circa una volta al mese. I vasi d'estate staranno bene all'aperto, rigorosamente all'ombra, in ambiente ricco d'umidità diffusa.

Moltiplicazione: La riproduzione dei ciclamini avviene per seme, e non è attuabile in appartamento.
