MEANDER

PERIOD: 1745-1775

DESCRIPTION: Parallel series of trunks and vertical, frisé-branches drawn over natural bouquets of flowers. The production of this fabric was extremely rich, varying from trunks to lace ribbons and interweaving flower garlands, concluding in the 60’s with a double meander.

TECHNIQUE: Satin base, cannalé, gros de Tours, moire, tabby with brocade design, polychrome float in gold and silver.

ORIGIN: This began with the proposal to differentiate the background from that of the vegetative and naturalistic figures. As time passed the setting of the background became even more important in the composition of the design so that it held a predominant position with a greater emphasis on geometric rigidity.

MEANDRO

PERIODO: 1745-1775

DESCRIZIONE: Serie parallele di tronchi o rami ondulanti e verticali con sovrapposizione di mazzolini di fiori a rappresentazione naturalistica. La produzione tessile è estremamente ricca e varia: l’impostazione a meandro ha una serie di varianti che va dal tronco al nastro a pizzo, all’intreccio di piccole ghirlande di fiori per finire poi, verso gli anni sessanta, nel doppio meandro.

TECNICA: Fondi di raso, cannettato, gro, moire, taffetà con disegni a trame broccate, slegate policrome, d’oro e d’argento.

ORIGINE: Nasce dalla proposta di differenziare l’impostazione del fondo del disegno da quella dell’elemento figurale vegetale-naturalistico. Col passare degli anni, l’impostazione del fondo diverrà sempre più importante nella composizione del disegno assumendone una parte predominante con una sempre maggior accentuazione della sua rigidità geometrica.

SPITALFIELDS

DESCRIPTION: Thin stems of vine shoots occasionally break off from flowing, vertical trunks and flowers leaning alternately to the right and left. Even though the design was natural, it presented remarkable graphic characteristics. The production basically followed the French idea differing in motif, less rich detail and the use of brilliant contrasting and fewer shades of colour.

ORIGIN: Spitalfields is a London suburb once housing the more important English industries in the 17th century, greatly expanded by the settling of a large number of French master weavers, exiles after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes.

DESCRIZIONE: Da tronchi ondulanti verticali si staccano, di volta in volta, esili steli, grandi tralci, o fiori alternativamente inclinati a destra e a sinistra; il disegno, sebbene realizzato in stile naturalistico, presenta notevoli caratterizzazioni grafiche. La produzione, in linea generale segue quella francese differenziandosi per i motivi più semplici, per minor ricchezza di particolari, per l’uso di colori contrastati, brillanti e con minori sfumature.

TECNICA: Fondi di taffetà, lampassi,gro,cannettati con disegni realizzati a più trame lanciate, broccate. policrome e metalliche nei lori differenti aspetti: lamellare, metallico e riccio.

ORIGINE: Spitalfields è un sobborgo di Londra ove ebbero sede le manifatture inglesi più importanti del Settecento incrementate notevolmente dall’insediamento di un folto numero di maestri tessitori francesi, esuli ugonotti in seguito alla revoca dell’editto di Nantes.
