MASTARA
/ Vllth century
This
church dedicated to St. John (Hovhannes-Yovhannes, in ancient Armenian)
is composed of a vast square tetraconch. In dimension the cupola is one
of the largest in Armenia even though the internal space of the church
appears to link it with Byzantine buildings of the Justinianic period.
The large dome is not visible from the exterior since it is enclosed in
a massive polygonal drum with corner niches.
