MAK’RAVANK
/ X, XIII century
The convent, found in the village of the same name, is made up of two
adjacent churches and a gavit’. The older church is to the
south, built in the X century in the style of an apse. In the western
area, the apse and two small adjacent rooms are surrounded by an
external rectangular wall. The barrel vaults rest on supporting walls
lightened by blind arches at the base that occupy the length of the span.
The external space is covered by a sloping roof.
The main church of St. Astvacacin, built in the XIII century, follows
the style of an Armenian cross. Externally, the arms of the cross are
emphasized by heavily sloping roofs, whilst the tambour that collapsed
at the same time as the dome, is surmounted by a thick cusp thanks to a
modern restoration. Only the base of the west - south wall of the gavit’
remains, on which rests a small, wooden construction. Important
restoration was begun in 1975.
